Each story in this series was released as a boxed set containing two books. The books are designed for two players, with each person taking a different book and controlling different characters. Most of the stories are set in the worlds of TSR role-playing games (mainly Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Marvel Super Heroes), though the second book is a generic space opera. The rules vary from book to book, but in general, players take turns moving from place to place and collecting items by reading passages in the books, occasionally fighting when they happen to end up in the same location. Some books are extremely tactical in feel, with players sending different characters into different locations to set traps for enemies; others are more story-oriented. Either way, there is plenty of player interaction, because in addition to fighting the other player, each participant must also frequently act like a game master in a role-playing session, controlling monsters encountered by his or her opponent or, in the case of the particularly role-playing-oriented seventh set, acting out the parts of various personalities encountered in the text. None of the books require the use of dice; most require the players to simultaneously shout out random numbers and then cross-reference them on a chart, while one book instead uses paper-rock-scissors. Some of the books can be adapted to be played by a single person, though the adventures that benefit the most from player interaction really do require two people.

Hey group, quick question. Can this gamebook be played solo? Do you have to have an opponent or could you play both roles?

[Demian's response: this series is really not designed for solo play, and you won't find a satisfying ending in most of the books without interacting with another player, since the goal is frequently to beat the other player rather than the book itself; that being said, though, you can have some fun randomly crawling through dungeons in some of these if you play them on your own -- just don't expect to 'win' in a satisfying way.]
