A rape scene which shocked the world and left a teenage actor scarred for decades has overshadowed the illustrious career of late filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci.
The Italian director died yesterday at the age of 77 following a glittering film career spanning more than half a century and netted him multiple Oscars.
But while he was recognised for a string of hit movies such as The Conformist, The Sheltering Sky and Stealing Beauty, it is one horrific scene from the 1972 flick Last Tango In Paris that is most firmly etched in the public’s memory.
The film, which starred Marlon Brando as an American widow who begins a torrid affair with a young Parisian woman played by Maria Schneider, shocked the world when it was first released due to its graphic sex scenes.
But one in particular stood out for its brutality.
In that scene, Brando, who was 48 at the time, sodomises Schneider’s character using a stick of butter as lubricant.

Schneider, who died of breast cancer in 2011 aged 58, was just 19 when the movie was shot, and she was so traumatised by it she never spoke to Bertolucci again after filming wrapped up.
In a 2007 Daily Mail interview, Schneider appeared to imply the scene wasn’t in the original script.
“They only told me about it before we had to film the scene and I was so angry. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can’t force someone to do something that isn’t in the script, but at the time, I didn’t know that,” she told the publication.
“Marlon said to me, ‘Maria, don’t worry, it’s just a movie,’ but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears.

“I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or apologise. Thankfully, there was just one take.”
Over the years, Schneider had also told reporters the film “ruined her life” and was her biggest regret — and that in her opinion, Bertolucci was a “gangster and a pimp”.

And in 2016, an interview with Bertolucci recorded in 2013 again resurfaced, with the veteran director admitting part of the infamous scene was set up without Schneider’s knowledge.
“The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting it,” Bertolucci said in the interview at La Cinémathèque Française in Paris.
“I’d been, in a way, horrible to Maria, because I didn’t tell her what was going on … I wanted her reaction as a girl, not as an actress.

“I wanted her to react humiliated … I think she hated me and also Marlon because we didn’t tell her.
“I didn’t want Maria to act her humiliation, her rage, I wanted Maria to feel … the rage and humiliation. Then she hated me for all (of her) life.”

— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) December 3, 2016The resurfaced clip sparked renewed backlash against Bertolucci and the film, with including A-listers like Jessica Chastain, Anna Kendrick and Chris Evans slamming the scene.
The reaction prompted Bertolucci to clarify in a statement that while the rape scene was in the script, the use of butter was not. It also prompted him to explain that no actual intercourse took place on set.
“I want for the very last time to clear up a ridiculous misunderstanding,” he said.

“Maria knew everything because she had read the script, in which it was all described.
“The only new thing was the idea of the butter. It was this, I learned many years later, that upset Maria, and not the violence that was in the scene and was envisaged in the script of the film.

“It is both consoling and distressing that anyone could be so naive to believe that what happens on the cinema screen actually takes place.”
Nevertheless, Schneider refused to speak to Bertolucci again, while Brando didn’t speak with Bertolucci for 15 years after production ended.
Schneider and Brando remained friends until his death in 2004.
