Apple subsidiary FileMaker has released version 11 of its flagship FileMaker Pro database. The updated software purports to make building and maintaining databases even easier, while acknowledging that many users are accustomed to using spreadsheets for database purposes by including pivot table-like reporting and Excel-like charting features. FileMaker Pro Server has also been updated, dropping the simultaneous client access limit for the Advanced version.

FileMaker Pro already laid claim to being one of the easiest cross-platform database tools available, but the company added additional features designed to enhance that ease of use. The Quick Start screen has been improved, offering clear ways to begin a new database. You can start from scratch; import existing data in tab or comma-separated files, Excel spreadsheets, or Bento databases; or choose from a number of Starter Solution templates. A new invoicing template has been added in version 11 to make that common business task practically a plug-and-chug operation; customer data can later be linked for other purposes.
A new Spotlight-style Quick Find feature also makes tracking down records in a database easier. Like the search bar in Safari or iTunes, you can begin typing a search term, and FileMaker Pro retrieves any related records. The search can be tweaked to look only in certain layouts or fields.
Once your data is in a database, FileMaker Pro 11 offers a number of new ways to work with your data. I know that I have tried to drill the idea that a spreadsheet is not a database into the heads of many an inexperienced office coworker, but that doesn't stop nearly everyone with a copy of Excel from using it for that purpose. Microsoft decided to ignore the distinction and glommed database-like features onto Excel; FileMaker has in turn decided to take features we expect from spreadsheets and add them to its database. So, FileMaker Pro 11 has a full complement of charting and spreadsheet-like reporting functions.
AdvertisementAll the standard area, line, bar, and pie charts are there, with all the common formatting options. Charts can be zapped into your website using Instant Web Publishing, and updated whenever new data is available. Reports can also be quickly generated using Table View, not unlike the pivot tables we know and love from Excel. Tables can be sorted, fields hidden or re-arranged, and easily exported to Excel.
The Layout/Report Assistant has been updated to streamline the report-generation process. Using a Bento-like style and theme, the assistant makes it easy to customize with any necessary headers, footers, or scripts.

Rounding out the new features are a new Snapshot Link export option, which can gather up selected records in a specific layout. Those records are linked back to the original database, so other FileMaker Pro users can make necessary edits to the data, and that data will be fed back into the original database. Also, databases built from imported data can be set to auto-import new records or updated information from an Excel, CSV, or TAB file.

New features for database developers are also included in version 11. FileMaker Pro adds additional filtering, variables, and scripting options for those with programming chops. Layout Folders offer a way to visually organize related layouts using drag-and-drop and a folder hierarchy. And finer-grained permissions controls offer improved file security. FileMaker Pro Advanced 11 offers developers easier customer menu design, improved handling of custom functions, and an improved interactive script debugger.
FileMaker Server 11 adds the ability to actively view FileMaker Pro clients connecting to the server in real-time to help spot potential issues before they become a problem for users. Backup File Clone creates an empty copy of your database with all the schema and architecture for use while troubleshooting a problem file. Server schedules and scripting time limits can be saved to streamline server operations. FileMaker Server Advanced 11 adds 100 simultaneous connections for Instant Web Publishing and unlimited client access to active databases.
In all, the changes appear to be an evolutionary change for a solid database app. FileMaker Pro 11 is $299 for a single license, and Advanced is $499. FileMaker Server 11 is $999 for up to 250 concurrent users; FileMaker Server Advanced 11 is $2,999. All are available now from FileMaker's website, while FileMaker Pro 11 has a 30-day trial demo available for download.
