About
Project Carrot is a clone of the 1998 Windows and Mac video game Jazz Jackrabbit 2 by Epic MegaGames that aims to replicate the original game in spirit and functionality while embracing modern design choices and attempting to be extensible on its later stages.
Originally started in 2013, Project Carrot was in works for about half a year before its development first slowed down and ultimately ground to a halt for a good while. In 2016, development resumed once again. Up to this point, Project Carrot has been entirely a single person project.
The Project Carrot family comprises of the main game and several utilities that are more or less essential for running it. Project Carrot Anim Extractor (PCAE) is used to extract the required graphic and sound resources from the original game files, while Project Carrot Level Converter (PCLC) and Project Carrot Tileset Converter (PCTC) convert .j2l
and .j2t
level and tileset files to Project Carrot's native formats. Additionally, a native level editor, Carrot Creator, has been planned.
Project Carrot is still very much an in-progress project, and thus only a fraction of the features of the original game are supported. The current features include:
- Basic single-player gameplay with one of the three official characters
- Close to complete JJ2 tileset and layer configuration compatibility
- Most level traversal events, like vines, springs, warps, and destructible scenery implemented
- Four of the nine official weapons available at varying stages of completion
- Five of the ~35 enemy types present
- Open source code with dependency libraries available to all three major desktop platforms

Jazz Jackrabbit is a combination of several styles of platform game. Being a rabbit, Jazz can run fast, and speed is a major component of the game, warranting instant comparison to Sonic the Hedgehog. There are a lot of items to collect, which requires extensive exploration, something that Sonic wouldn't have time for. Finally, Jazz carries a big gun and finds many different kinds of ammo. He's also a great jumper, so perhaps he's Sonic, Mario, and Duke Nukem rolled into one. The graphics and sound are excellent, and Jazz Jackrabbit is generally regarded as one of the best DOS games ever. Originally, episodes 1-3 and 4-6 could be purchased separately, and three new episodes, A-C, were added in the CD-ROM version, Jazz Jackrabbit CD. Episode X (originally released as the standalone Jazz Jackrabbit: Holiday Hare demo in 1994) was added in version 1.3. A second Episode X was released in 1995 as Jazz Jackrabbit: Holiday Hare 1995, which takes place on the planet Candion instead of Holidaius. There are 10 episodes in this game, with only two episodes playable in the shareware version.
Episode 1: Turtle Terror
Episode 2: Ballistic Bunny
Episode 3: Rabbit's Revenge
Episode 4: Gene Machine
Episode 5: The Chase Is On
Episode 6: The Final Clash
Episode A: Outta Dis World
Episode B: Turtle Soup
Episode C: Wild Wabbit
Episode X: Holiday Hare
